THE GHOST: THE INVISIBLE COMMUNICATOR
It was Saturday night. My friend Zoe had an invite to a big party at a prominent artist’s loft in downtown L.A. Her mover-and-shaker community would be there in full swing, plus plenty of new fascinating friends to meet.
She was excited to bring her boyfriend, Zack, a charming extrovert who’s always fun at parties. They had been together for six months and so far, the relationship had been effortless. It was going to be a fabulous night of introducing him to her aspirational world.
One slight complication. Before they left for the party, Zack and Zoe had ordered in Thai for dinner, and more food had shown up than the couple was expecting. Innocently thinking “sharing is caring,” Zack decided to text a few of his hipster buddies to come over to his place before the loft party to partake in this glorious feast.
This seemed reasonable to Zoe. After all, she wouldn’t want all those pad see ew noodles to go to waste, and she found his longtime pals Brody and Mark entertaining enough in small doses.
However, she was secretly harboring worries that if they came for dinner she might have to bring them to the party. Showing up with a whole squad of bros wasn’t her first choice, especially when she knew they would embarrassingly leech onto Zack all night, seriously limiting the star couple’s social potential. Despite her growing concerns, under no circumstances was Zoe going to tell Zack that inviting his friends over was a bad idea. She was possessed by the Ghost.
Afraid to speak her truth, religiously compliant to other people’s preferences, the Ghost archetype vanishes our voices until we go completely invisible. With a belief that we’re unimportant compared to everyone else, she tells us our own desires are wrong, sending us into full shutdown status. The Ghost feels that we have no say in the matter, so why speak up? Or she’s so fixated on not wanting to hurt someone else’s feelings that she jeopardizes our own happiness.
Zoe was relieved when Brody, always a bit of a “Donnie Downer,” said he didn’t want to go to the party. Completely unaware of her Ghosted feelings, Zack persuaded him, “Dude, you have to come! It’s going to be awesome!” Zoe choked down her irritation, nervously playing with her chopsticks as again and again, Brody groaned and moaned about having to go to the invite-only insider party, and sweet Zack, totally unfazed and loyal to his childhood friend, kept insisting that he tag along.
Packed into the back seat of the Uber between Brody and Zack, with Mark playing DJ in the front, Zoe’s mood plummeted as she endured Brody’s nonstop complaints over the obnoxious music. “I don’t know about this. I shouldn’t have come. This is going to be stupid. I’ll probably leave right when I get there.” She wanted to snap, “Okay, then why don’t we pull over right here and let you out?” But the Ghost continued to bite her tongue.
